Dilly

Champion Hamilton's Field of Daffodils

When Dilly's breeder, my friend Nancy Miller, called to tell me that she was taking a break from Swissies I was sad, but when she then asked if I would like to have Dilly, I didn't hesitate to say yes. It was a quick decision and one I have never regretted for a minute.

Dilly was a funny girl. Even though she joined the family as an adult, at home she was as easy as pie and never caused trouble with the other dogs-- she was not the one in charge, but she was definitely in charge of her own world. And when she was visiting elsewhere she quickly put herself in charge.

Outside she did cause a bit of trouble -- she was an escape artist. She could go over or under any fence. I finally gave up and installed hot wire just to keep her from teaching the other dogs how to escape. I wasn't worried about her running away as all she ever did was sit on the porch and wait to be let back in the house. Her message was clear -- "I am supposed to be lounging on the bed, not running around with dogs outside".

I don't think Dilly ever realized that she was as big a dog as she was. She was very much a lap dog, even if she didn't fit in anyone's lap. She loved nothing more than to lounge on the couch with her big head in my lap.

Dilly  was a striking bitch, with more bone and substance than the average Swissy. A very drafty, typey bitch. Despite her size, she was a beautiful mover and rarely put a foot down wrong. Bitches like Dilly do not come along very often.

Unfortunately Dilly was rather "reproductively challenged" and despite everyone's best efforts, she only got pregnant twice, resulting in a grand total of two puppies. But what lovely puppies they were, and what a wonderful mother she was.

Dilly died of Leptospirosis infection at age 7-1/2.
