Pinky

Stone Lea in the Pink

Although Pinky was a six year old with two previous homes when she joined us here in Virginia, from the moment she arrived she fit right in. Within days it was as if she'd always been a part of the family. I only wish she'd arrived sooner because she was such a love.

Pinky was as sweet as the day is long. She had an incredibly gentle nature and loved everyone she met both canine and human. She was not a great 'show dog' and though she earned a couple of points, she never finished her championship, but she was a great dog in all the ways that truly matter.

Even though I do not generally enjoy practicing obedience excercises, Pinky loved practicing some of the excercises for Rally obedience in the yard and her enjoyment made the time & effort very worthwhile even if all we ever did was practice rather than enter an actual Rally Trial. Her enthusiasm likely had as much to do with the treats involved as with spending time with me, but whatever the reasons, we both had fun.

Pinky loved spending time 'tagging along'  around the house and especially enjoyed trying to "help" with gardening. This does not mean her "helping" was always welcome as she sat on more plants than you could count. No matter how many plants she killed off it was impossible to stay mad at her because she was just so happy & lovable.

An experienced mother before she arrived here, Pinky had one litter here in Virginia. She was a truly wonderful mother to her four puppies -- incredibly patient & loving. She really just loved being a mom and watching over her little ones. When her puppies were a few weeks old she even welcomed the addition of a singleton puppy who needed some "littermates" to play with since he had none. As with everything, Pinky just took this in stride and happily doted on him as she did with her own.

Although she 'retired' from having her own puppies, after her one litter here, Pinky delighted in playing with any other puppies in the house. Her patience and energy was boundless. And the puppies in turn delighted in spending time with "Aunt Pinky".  I think in many ways Pinky herself was always a puppy at heart.  Her joie de vivre was always sure to make anyone in her presence smile. She certainly always made me smile.

Pinky succumed to sepsis following an unsuccessful surgery for an intestinal blockage.

Pinky is buried in the garden she loved, under a bush with lovely pink flowers. Each time it blooms I think of her.

She arrived late, left too soon and will never be forgotten.
