Tubby… what a wonderful dog. She was absolutely the easiest dog anyone could ever hope to have. I used to joke that she was the Chia Pet of Swissies -- just add water and you had the perfect dog. Well, with Tubby you would have had to add some kibble because living up to her name was her mission in life. She never met a meal she didn’t like.
Tubby was not only easy to live with, but she was also utterly enjoyable to have around the house. She had a delightful temperament and was a true ambassador of the breed. She loved to snuggle up to you on the couch and could make anyone feel like they were her very favorite person. She had her quirks --she loved to eat soap, she always hogged the pillows in bed and she was known to have danced on a table once or twice -- but she was such a goodhearted dog that you simply could not get mad at her.
Although she was not raised around children, she adored them and they returned the sentiment. At any gathering you would find Tubby surrounded by kids and loving every moment. With her loving and calm nature, even children who were apprehensive around dogs quickly fell in love with the Tubbster
The phrase “born to be a mother” definitely applied to Tubby. Long before she was old enough to have her own puppies she would take on the role of nanny to any puppy in her vicinity - whether they wanted a nanny or not. When she had her first litter she was happier than a kid on Christmas morning with her brood of nine puppies. She was an excellent mother to the puppies in each of her three litters and passed along her loving, friendly temperament to all of her offspring.
Tubby had a very easy time finishing her championship and was my first Bred-by Exhibitor Champion. She was short, but she had bone, substance, nice type and a head to die for. She was not everyone’s cup of tea, but she was mine! She finished in style winning Best of Breed over champions under Robert Forsyth when she was 15 months old. Although she was not shown in the regular classes after attaining her championship, she won the Brood Bitch class at he Blue Ridge Specialty both times she was entered and was a regular in the Veterans Sweepstakes once she was eligible.
Lighting rarely strikes twice, but if I am ever lucky enough to breed another one like Tubby, I hope I’m smart enough to recognize that fact and keep them all for myself.
Tubby lived to be 12-½ years old. They were 12-½ very happy years.
