GSMDCA/AKC Champion Tye Robertson, TT
I did not know Tye as a puppy, but I so wish I did. Tye was originally sold to another family but it was a very bad fit for all concerned. Thankfully shortly after her first birthday the family realized that Tye was definitely the wrong dog for them and gave her up. With the assistance of Rob & Julianne Wilson of Shamrock GSMD, she made her way from Kentucky to Sharyl Mayhew‘s home in Virginia, which is where I first met her.
Very quickly Tye & I developed a wonderful bond and every visit to Sharyl’s house would find me with Tye, -- often with her laying with her head in my lap. Soon Tye began spending weekends at my house. Those weekend became more frequent and longer, until she just stayed. Eventually we made it official and I co-owned Tye with Sharyl's brother, Norman, and the dog who had lost her first home now had two homes who loved her very much.
Tye was a sassy, funny dog who had a wonderful, warm personality. She loved attention and was quite a ham. She loved to pull a cart, but for her it was less about doing a job and more about getting attention. If Tye could have arranged it, I think she would have been a vaudevillian, she had a wonderful sense of humor and just loved being in the spotlight.
Tye earned not only her GSMDCA championship, she came back out of retirement in 1996 and earned her AKC Championship the same week she turned six. Her first weekend in the ring as an AKC Champion she earned Best of Opposite Sex over a huge entry, and she promptly retired again and was spayed.
Because she loved the show ring so much, once she turned seven I showed Tye in as many Veterans events as I could allowing her to once again be the star she knew she was. At 8-1/2 she was selected Best of Opposite sex in the Veteran Sweepstakes at the regional specialty held two days after the National Specialty in Virginia Beach (she had also particpated in the National Draft Trial, the herding test and obedience --it was a fun week). Tye showed for the last time as a 9-1/2 year old, winning 1st place in the 9-11 Veterans class and retiring from the show ring once again, this time hanging up her show lead for good.
Tye had two litters, a litter of one and a litter of four, both delivered by c-section. While five puppies is not many, it was enough to help with the foundation of my breeding program. Tye’s first litter produced my beloved Sean. The second litter included a dog named Anthony (Precious Movin’ Out v Schatz) who would later sire two Dufenhof litters. Tye's first litter was bred by Sharyl Mayhew, the second by Sharyl and Julianne Wilson.
Through her sons, Tye helped shape the future of my breeding program and her descendants share my home today. Indeed, her great-great-great-granddaughter Caroline is just as sassy as Tye and now sleeps on my bed just as Tye did so many years ago.
Tye passed away shortly after her 11th birthday.
